Asa’s Mezzanine have released the instrumental single “Mara” on digital platforms today, 30 October 2026. The Tuscan, Italy-based quartet recorded the track in June at Monolith Audio Lab in South Berlin, with Virginia Lisi on piano and synth, Lorenzo Morellini on bass, Antonio Mugnaioli on guitar, and Filippo Nassi on drums and percussion.
A figure from folklore
Asa’s Mezzanine built “Mara” around the nocturnal folklore figure that sits on a sleeper’s chest and paralyses the body while the mind remains awake. The song explores the boundary between waking and dreaming, with the body becoming a cell. As with the band’s other music, it contains no lyrics and uses rhythm, dynamics and tension instead of a vocal centre.
The single is the third part of a recurring line through the quartet’s discography. It follows “Onibaba” from the 2022 EP “When She Met Herself” and “Janara” from the 2025 album “Rest And Fight”, which was released by Overdub Recordings.
Virginia Lisi on keys
Virginia Lisi plays piano and synth in Asa’s Mezzanine. Her parts sit alongside Morellini’s bass, Mugnaioli’s guitar, and Nassi’s drums and percussion in the band’s instrumental arrangements. The group formed in Tuscany in 2021 and writes music between progressive and post-metal, using non-linear cinematic structures.
Recorded in South Berlin
Asa’s Mezzanine co-produced “Mara” with Filippo Buono, who also engineered, mixed and mastered the recording at Monolith Audio Lab. Armando Taddeo of WIDE Filming directed the official video, with the South Berlin crew, Alessandro and Davide, thanked in the production credits.
The band previously shared stages with Maruja, Årabrot, Mr. Bison, Gotho, LVTVM and Alphataurus before following “When She Met Herself” with “Rest And Fight”.
