SPIRITBOX vocalist Courtney LaPlante has joined Canadian hardcore band Comeback Kid on “Shedding Season”, a new track from the album “Chosen Hell”. The official music video, directed by Graham GS, is out now, while the digital single and album are due through SharpTone Records on 6 November.
A vocal exchange about release
“ Shedding Season” centres on a back-and-forth between LaPlante and Comeback Kid vocalist Andrew Neufeld. Neufeld said the song deals with the stress, drama and pain people carry until they decide to leave that weight behind. Its lyrics describe drawing a line, severing ties and treating the loss of a harmful relationship as “a solid win”.
“Shedding Season” is about peeling back the stress, drama, and pain that we have been carrying through life. It is about the period in life when the decision is made to set ourselves free from harmful weight that we have lived with up until that point. It is about defining that moment and feeling confident in the choice to move forward leaving it behind. We were fortunate enough to get Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox to guest on this song and she crushed it. It is a back and forth, “me against you” type of lyrical narrative between Courtney and I. Her voice is untouchable and her guttural yell screams volumes of passion in this song. “Losing you was a solid win.”
- Andrew Neufeld, Comeback Kid vocalist
The video was filmed by Montréal and Los Angeles production units. GS directed, edited and colour-graded the clip, while Louis-Philippe Michaud served as director of photography for the Montréal unit.
Courtney LaPlante’s split role
LaPlante, born in 1989, is SPIRITBOX’s vocalist and frontwoman. She joined the band in 2017 after previously singing with Iwrestledabearonce and Unicron. On “Shedding Season”, she provides the opposing voice in the song’s lyrical exchange with Neufeld.
“Chosen Hell” arrives Friday
“Chosen Hell” is Comeback Kid’s eighth studio album, following the band’s 2022 album “Heavy Steps” and 2024 EP “TROUBLE”. The 11-track record was produced, mixed and mastered by Will Putney, and also features Incendiary vocalist Brendan Garrone on “Yesterday’s Gone”. SharpTone Records will release it on 6 November.
