MOTHICA, the Los Angeles singer, performer and visual artist McKenzie Ellis, released the single “My Confession” on 30 October through SharpTone Records. The track arrives with a cinematic fantasy video directed by Micah Hamilton, with MOTHICA serving as artist and creative director. It follows this year’s “Somewhere In Between” EP and continues her move towards heavier, louder music.
Ellis began “My Confession” as an extended stream of verses recorded at home before taking the demo into the studio. Producer Elliot Polokoff and co-writer Trever Stewart helped shape the material, adding the chorus built around the idea of holding on to pain because it feels familiar.
‘My Confession’ is one of those rare songs that fell out of the sky. I wrote it as a stream of consciousness, singing a seemingly endless amount of verses that just kept pouring out into my very crappy home recording setup

The lyrics move between fans, past relationships and addiction. Ellis said the song reflects her tendency to choose anger and chaos over grief, with the repeated confession becoming a confrontation with patterns she has not escaped.
The lyric I am most proud of is: ‘it’s easier when I suffer / gives me reason to bite.’ Sometimes being angry is easier than feeling grief or sadness. And I have sought out chaos because it’s what I am used to. Who would I be if I finally learned my lesson?

The video was produced by Ryan Joseph for 5ECHOS, with Joseph also serving as cinematographer and colourist. Hamilton edited the film, while Immanuel Presbyterian was among the locations acknowledged in the production credits.
MOTHICA is built around McKenzie Ellis’s singing, performance work and visual direction. She wrote the lyrics for “My Confession” and developed the song with Polokoff and Stewart. The release presents her as both the voice of the track and the creative director of its accompanying film.
