Norwegian alternative rock band Kalandra have released their new single “A Ship Has Left the Shore”, the last one to arrive before their third album, “The Other Side”, which comes out on 13 November 2026 via By Norse Music. The band announced the release with a video for the track.
The song deals with losing someone dear. It is based on an idea by guitarist and keyboardist Jogeir DaaeMæland, and the lyrics were written by DaaeMæland together with vocalist Katrine Stenbekk as a response to the death of a close family friend. The track builds slowly towards its destination and asks the listener to be patient and attentive, carrying its grief with a quietness that leaves space for the emotions to reveal themselves.
A song about death and absence
The band describe how the single fits into the wider album:
Much of the album explores what happens as we drift off to sleep - the space between consciousness and dreams, and the worlds we encounter when we let go. A Ship Has Left the Shore takes us somewhere else entirely: to the other side of life, and to the profound question of how we cope with death and the absence of those we love.
- Kalandra
On “The Other Side”, Kalandra follow a series of vivid and recurring dreams from the past few years. Stenbekk and DaaeMæland began exploring dream analysis, kept a notebook by the bed and wrote down fragments of dreams as they woke. Those scattered images, emotions and subconscious narratives became the foundation for the new collection of songs.
Vinyl, digibook and a European run
The album will be available on black vinyl, limited edition coloured vinyl, digibook and on all digital platforms, with pre-orders open through the By Norse store.
Kalandra have also announced their biggest European and UK headliner tour to date, with New Zealand singer-songwriter Finnegan Tui as special guest. The 2027 tour starts on 26 February at Gebaeude 9 in Cologne and ends on 27 March at Paradiso in Amsterdam, with stops in Munich, Stuttgart, Bristol, Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester, London, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw, Berlin, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Zurich, Milano, Lyon and Paris along the way. Before that, the band plays six Norwegian dates between 26 November and 12 December 2026, including Folken in Stavanger, Kulturhuset in Bergen and SALT in Oslo.
Katrine Stenbekk’s voice and pen
Katrine Stenbekk sings in Kalandra and is one of the band’s songwriters. For “The Other Side” she and Jogeir DaaeMæland turned their own dreams into source material, keeping notes by the bed and shaping the fragments into songs. She also co-wrote the lyrics of “A Ship Has Left the Shore”, the band’s response to the death of a close family friend.
