Melbourne heavy band Future Static have released a new single, “Waterworks”, taken from their upcoming second album, “Ornaments & Memories”. The record is scheduled for release on 6 November via Wild Thing Records.

According to the band’s announcement, the track marks a return to the group’s post hardcore roots. Lyrically, the song addresses themes of negative tunnel vision, self sabotage and unavoidable meltdowns, and these concepts are paired with rhythmic chaos and urgent guitar leads to reflect the overwhelming nature of the subject matter.

A darker second record

“Ornaments & Memories” is the Melbourne quintet’s second full length release, following their 2023 debut album, “Liminality”. The new material explores a darker and more philosophical direction, with a focus on internal and external conflict, growth, and the experience of living in a rapidly accelerating world.

The single gives a first taste of that shift. Where “Liminality” introduced the band to an international audience, the follow-up widens the scope of the songwriting toward questions about conflict and change, both personal and in the world around the band.

Amariah Cook up front

Amariah Cook sings lead vocals in Future Static. She has fronted the Melbourne band through its rise from the Australian heavy scene, including the 2023 debut album “Liminality”, and her voice is one of the elements the band has built its sound around. On “Waterworks” she carries the urgent, chaotic material the band describes in the announcement.

“Waterworks” is out now, and “Ornaments & Memories” follows on 6 November through Wild Thing Records.
