Desolate Plains have released the official lyric video for “Dead Mother Syndrome”, a track from their fourth album “The Inexplicable Truth”, which came out on 23 October 2026 through Molon Lave Records. The Athens band announced the video two days before the album’s release date.
Exploring themes of maternal absence
The lyrics, written by guitarist Lampros Potamianos, deal with the loss of a mother figure. Lines such as “Psychic death of maternal function” and “Maternal decathexis leads to absence that cannot be mourned” borrow from psychoanalytic language, a step away from the inner struggles and esoteric search themes the band listed on earlier records. The song describes a deathbed scene, attachment disorders and a narrator who cannot fully engage with the world.
Featuring Aliki Katriou and Eleni Nota
Aliki Katriou sings on the track. She has been the band’s vocalist since its formation in 2016 and also performs with Cyclocosmia, AKKT, Chaos Rising, Eight Lives Down and Tattered Pages. Drums are handled by Eleni Nota, credited in the video as eleninotadrums. The rest of the recording is the work of Potamianos, who plays guitars, bass and synth and wrote both the music and the lyrics.
Production at Noise Foundry Productions
The album was mixed and mastered by Dan Baune at Noise Foundry Productions. “The Inexplicable Truth” is the band’s fourth full-length and their first since “The Inexhaustible Imperfection of the World” from 2024.
A decade of music from Athens
Desolate Plains formed in Athens in 2016 and have stayed on Molon Lave Records throughout. Their debut “Practicing the Inner Arts” appeared in 2017, followed by “The Face of the Earth” in 2019 and “The Inexhaustible Imperfection of the World” in 2024. The band plays a mix of thrash, death and black metal, with Katriou’s voice at the front of the sound since the beginning.
