Dutch melodic death metal unit Downcast Collision have released a new single, “Hollow”, accompanied by an official music video. The song serves as the latest preview of the Rotterdam group’s upcoming second full-length album, “Beyond the Gates of Hell”.
The track was recorded at Mattie’s Place in Rotterdam and mixed, produced, and mastered by Erwin Hermsen at Toneshed Studios. The accompanying video was filmed on location at Soundville in Rotterdam by Studio Fred Baaren, featuring band photography by Brigitte Mulders and Martijn Frijters of TeamBeeld.
Monica “Demonica” Janssen leading the charge
Frontwoman Monica “Demonica” Janssen delivers a visceral vocal performance that anchors the track’s emotional weight. Janssen, who co-founded the group in 2012, previously handled bass duties alongside lead vocals before bassist Ronald Pieterse joined the fold in 2022.
In “Hollow”, her growls and impassioned phrasing drive a narrative dealing with grief, numbness, and self-inflicted destruction in the wake of profound loss. The lyrics confront the struggle of carrying on when an anchor is gone, turning personal despair into intense, melodic aggression.
Dark science and the path from Rise Up
Formed in Rotterdam in 2012, Downcast Collision made their initial impact with their 2017 debut full-length “Rise Up”, followed in 2023 by their single “Boys (Summertime Love)”. The band has built their identity around a conceptual blend of dark science and dimensional conflict, combining crushing death metal riffs with sharp, memorable hooks.
“Beyond the Gates of Hell” marks the band’s return to album-length storytelling. The current line-up features Monica “Demonica” Janssen on lead vocals, Peter van Toren on drums, Casper van der Woord and Matthieu van Egmond on guitars, and Ronald Pieterse on bass.
